Equipping Catholic Families for February Saints!

Welcome to our monthly summary of crafts and family traditions related to the Monthly Devotion, Key Feast Days and the appropriate Season of the Liturgical Calendar. As our kids get older, our activities and commitment to Catholic crafts has changed and adjusted (at least for our tween, teen and young adult kids)! While we haven’t exactly been adding a lot of Catholic crafts around here, we do enjoy pulling out the crafts and programs we’ve developed over the years, sometimes sharing them with younger families in our parish!

Feast Day Fun: St Gertrude

St Gertrude the Great (1256-1302) was a Benedictine mystic and she is patroness of the West Indies.  She was born in Germany and placed in a Benedictine convent at the age of five. She had a vision of Jesus at the age of twenty-six. She wrote a number of books and many prayers, spreading devotion of the Sacred Heart. She is also credited with this special prayer for the souls in Purgatory. Jesus, Himself told her that He would ease the suffering of 1000 souls, release them from purgatory and welcome them into Heaven, each time this prayer is prayed devoutly!

5 Mysteries of Mercy

The Mysteries of the Rosary offer intense events within the lives of Jesus and Mary for focus and contemplation while we recite the prayers of each decade of the Rosary. While the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is considerably shorter, I started wishing there were associated Mysteries of Mercy to contemplate during each decade of prayers.  In Scripture, we see Jesus model His Mercy as He interacts with the people and preaches to them. I did search online for Mysteries of Mercy, but only after I tried my best to extrapolate them for myself from Jesus’ Public Ministry.
