Clare’s Costly Cookie by Julie Kelly, illustrated by Mary MacArthur.

Review by Bridget McConkey, age 8.

Clare’s Costly Cookie is a very nice book. I like how it’s about a girl growing closer and closer to God, but it’s not only about her praying to God and getting closer to God, but Clare even has these Saint cards that she tells you about. For example, St. Agnes. She was young and very beautiful so many people wanted to marry her but she always refused. When she refused to marry a prince, the king tried to ask her but she refused again and said that her heart was for God. Then he got angry and ordered for her to be killed.

December 9th is the Feast Day of St Juan Diego. With the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday…we will be able to use some of the same decorations (and mexican food!) again…very soon!

St Nicholas is well known for his love for children and for using his wealth to help the poor. As a bishop, he established a poorhouse and a hospital.

Feast Day Fun: St Cecilia!

St Cecilia was born to a wealthy family. Her father promised her hand in marriage, but she had already made her vow to Christ. She convinced her new husband to let her keep her promise and he was converted to Christianity, along with his brother. All three were martyred for their Faith.

It is true… I am a fan of the Saints. I have eagerly read about a number of them over the years and I just keep getting blown away by their lives, their Faith and their examples of Holiness. In my passion for researching the saints, I have in the last year released a number of craft kits featuring my 15 year old daughter’s drawings of over 44 Saints!

Feast Day Fun: St Jude

Pope John Paul II was our Holy Father from 1978-2005. He wrote many important Catholic documents, traveled extensively throughout the world, welcomed millions of pilgrims and worked to reconcile denominations and restore democracy and religious freedom in communist countries.
